The 14 membership survey questions

A membership survey asks the people who belong to your association, club, union or gym whether membership is worth what they pay, which benefits they use and whether they plan to renew. These fourteen questions open with three about who is answering, and every one is ready to edit in the survey generator.

How to use the membership survey

Send it to your whole roster well ahead of renewal notices, early enough to act on the answers, and at the same point every year. Add the people whose membership lapsed. The IUSSP did in 2022, and 38 percent of its 930 replies came from former members.[1] Question 1 has a lapsed option, so one link serves both.

Members are never asked for a name or an email address. The two written answers are the only optional questions.

Start by setting the tenure and membership type answers beside your roster, then report each group on its own line. Read question 4 by tenure band. Benefits ticked on question 8 and missing from question 7 are what to offer or announce next.

Membership survey FAQ

What questions should be on a membership survey?

Ask how long they have been a member and how often they take part, then whether they expect to renew, whether membership is worth the fee, which benefits they used and which they want more of. Close with two written answers and one overall rating.

What questions should you ask club members?

The same fourteen. Swap the benefit list in questions 6, 7 and 8 for what your club runs, such as fixtures, socials, coaching or court time, and rename the membership types in question 2.

When should you send a membership survey?

Once a year, at the same point each time, and early enough before renewals that you can still change something members asked for.

How do you survey members who have left?

Send them the same link. Question 1 lets them say their membership has lapsed, and question 12 asks what made them think about not renewing. Report former and current members separately.
